Volunteer
Special Needs Surrogate Parent PDF Print E-mail

SFUSD is recruiting volunteers to make a difference in the education of special needs children. These volunteers will act as a student’s “surrogate parent” for educational issues and will help students who receive special education services. Training will be provided on a variety of special education topics, including individualized education programs (IEP), parents’ rights, and educational goals. The school district assigns “surrogate parents” when no parent can be located or when juvenile court has specifically limited the right of parents or guardians to make educational decisions. Orientation and training will be provided to individuals or interested groups. Can You Find Two Hours a Week To Change A Child's Life?
If you are interested in working one-on-one with at risk children in San Francisco, you may want to contact The College-Bound Foundation(CBF). CBF pairs volunteer Tutors with students living in San Francisco Public Housing. Each Tutor works in partnership with a Learning Coach and agrees to meet with an assigned child once a week for one year. The time and devotion provided by you and the Learning Coach helps to focus and motivate the student, often averting bad life decisions and enhancing academic performance. As a Tutor you will focus on one of the core subjects that the child is struggling in. You will also be in partnership with the teacher and in some cases a school counselor.
