Cerebral Palsy (CP) PDF Print E-mail

Cerebral palsy is a mental disorder involving brain injuries. It is a permanent disorder. It can develop when you are developing in your mother’s uterus (fetal development birth), or it can develop shortly after birth. Some of the symptoms may include paralysis or seizures. If you have CP it can get better or worse because there is no cure. Your posture or walking can get worse also. CP affects the brain. There is no treatment to CP, but the doctors will only help you live with the disorder. By helping you develop your motor skills such as walking and running.

There are different types of CP:

  • Tetraplegia or Quadriplegia- this involves damage to the four limbs, trunk, and head. You may not be able to walk or stand up.
  • Diplegia: Four limbs are affected. You might be able to walk alone with crutches or a walker.
  • Hemiplegia: Only the right or left side of your body can be affected. You might be able to walk.
  • Ataxia: Your brain is very affected because your cerebellum is severely damaged. Your balance may be off, especially while walking.
  • Athetoid or Dyskinetic: your body parts move by there self, involuntary.
  • Spastic: Your brain is severely damage and affects your whole body.
