What is a Gang Injunction?
Its suppose to prohibit "gang members" from entering a "safety zone" named by the city. In the mission district its 60 blocks! A similar gang injunction has been placed in the Fillmore & Bayview Districts. Those on the injunction are prohibited from standing together, have mandatory curfews in the safety zone, cannot wear certain colors & prohibited from carrying felt tip markers. The reality is that this injunction does nothing to address the root causes of violence. It creates more power for police to use racial profilig & harassment to people of color, especially youth.

CURRENT CITY WIDE DEMANDS

*Clear & fair criteria to get on the list
*Guaranteed support services for people on the injunction
*A clear process for getting off the list
*An official investigation on police misconduct & racial profiling
*A Public commitment from city officials to implement a long term violence prevention plan that addresses root causes of violence
*Outlawing future gang injunctions

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
If you're stopped by the police...

*DO NOT SELF-IDENTIFY AS A "GANG MEMBER"
*Exercise your right to remain silent if you are arrested
*DO NOT wear any colors or show tattoos that identify you as a gang member
*If you are searched by the police clearly state that you dont consent to a search especially if there are witnesses, say it loud
*If you are afraid that you might be on the list consult with a lawyer as quickly as possible
*DONT consent to being photographed by the police
*DONT tag gang affiliations on your school materials ( papers, binders, etc...) it will be held againstyou in court!

WHY GANG INJUNCTIONS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION
The Justice Policy Institute has come out with a new study how repression tactics like "gang injunction" do not work in reducing crime.
Gang injunctions are a form of legalized racial profiling giving police more power to stop suspected "gang members" and harassing them with no penalties.

THE REAL SOLUTION

Gang Injunctions do nothing to address the root causes of violence like poverty and lack services. To stop violence we need guaranteed human rights like; quality education, living wage jobs, affordable health care & affordable housing.
