On November 10, a University of Chicago graduate was shot and killed near the campus. The victim, Shaoxiong Zheng, a 24-year old student studying abroad at the University of Chicago, was walking on the 5400 block of S. Ingleside Avenue in the Hyde Park neighbourhood. Suddenly, a dark-coloured car pulled up, and a gunman got out shortly before 2 pm.

Shaoxiong Zeng, a motivated, independent, and intellectually curious student graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2019 and got his master's of Statistics at the University of Chicago this past summer. His close friend Nick Jackson was mourning his death. "He had just gotten his driver's license; he was in a new relationship. He had the whole world in front of him, and this happened," Jackson said.

On the same day, just two hours earlier. There is gunfire in that neighbourhood. There is a witness who heard 30 shots within 10 seconds. The windows and doors were broken. Many workers and employers were concerned about returning to work. There is also data showing that there are up to 196 violent crimes reported in 2021. Compared to 2020, which is up to 155.
