Healthy Coping Skills

When you’re going through a tough time, the best thing is to use healthy coping skills. According to the very well mind article, “Coping skills help you tolerate, minimize, and deal with stressful situations in life.” There are many different coping skills that you can use to help you reduce any stresses that come your way.

Emotion-focused coping skills are used in everyday life, such as exercise, taking a bath, giving yourself a pep talk, and meditation. Problem-focused coping skills include time management, asking for support, establishing healthy boundaries, and creating a to-do list.

If you feel distressed, ask yourself if you need to change the situation or find a way to better cope with the situation. Once you have answered this question, then you can decide which managing strategy best suits you. There are two different coping strategies such as emotion-based coping skills and problem-based coping skills.

As I mentioned before, problem-based coping skills are the best strategy to use when changing your situation or removing a stressful thing from your life. For example, if you are in an unhealthy relationship, it is better to end the relationship because that will release your sadness and anxiety. The emotion-based coping skills are helpful when you need to take care of your feelings or when a problem cannot be taken care of or is simply out of your control. The best advice is to take care of your feelings in a healthy way.

There are many examples of what activities are under these strategies. Cleaning the house, coloring, cooking a meal, doing yoga, and drawing are a few things that you can do under healthy emotion-focused coping skills. Asking for support from a friend or professional, creating a to-do list, engaging in problem-solving, establishing healthy boundaries, and walking away are a few healthy examples of the problem-based coping skills used when trying to distress from a situation.

There are also many unhealthy behaviors that you need to avoid, such as drinking alcohol or using drugs, overeating, sleeping too much, venting to others, and overspending. These are many examples of unhealthy behaviors that people have been led to do. These behaviors have also been linked to poor health problems, and they last for a more extended period if not taken care of as soon as it is noticed by friends, family, or medical professionals.

These coping strategies might not work for you, but they may work better for someone else. When using coping strategies, there’s always room for improvement. For example, you can try different activities like going for a walk or engaging in a hobby.
