Everyday Could Be A Picnic

Everyday could be a picnic, but if you'd prefer it to be a once a year thing there's a day for that. It's time to go outside, and enjoy some time with someone else! Whether it's with family, friends, or a significant other take some time to enjoy each other's company and escape from the formality and daily habits of our lives. Today, aside from the obvious holiday this year, Father's Day, is also International Picnic day!

Picnic Day is an informal food holiday and has almost no rules and so many different options when it comes down to what you can do on this day. Although it is not often seen or talked about in busy cities like San Francisco, if you've ever watched a family movie or a cheesy rom-com, chances are you know what a picnic is. It's part of the intro of every Full House episode, with the whole family gathered in the park with a blanket and a basket full of food.

Most schools and sometimes even companies or workplaces host picnics at the end of the year at the end of some great achievement like the graduating class of a certain year or a goal met. A picnic is really just a gathering of people outside with food. Have you ever heard somebody use the phrase "life is no picnic" or rather something along those lines? The word picnic is meant to be used a joyous and happy thing, something enjoyable. Something like an outing with friends or family and food to eat!

The idea of picnics are said to be invented by the French as they began to get popular following the end of the French Revolution. It became a common pastime in France to visit the Royal Gardens, which had just been opened to public, and to enjoy long meals there.

The possibilities are endless when deciding on what to bring or what to do at a picnic because there's really no rules on what you can and can't bring. This year as Father's Day falls on International Picnic Day, it provides another reason for some families to get outside and get some bonding time. The idea of a picnic sounds great when you think about it and it's a shame we don't see as many, because picnics are by far some of the easiest things to arrange and throw together. Whether you want a small crowd or a large one, either will suffice! And who doesn't love food? A picnic is similar to that of a potluck, in which each person on their own can or is asked to bring a different dish. The last thing that needs to be decided on is a park to hold the picnic, which shouldn't be that difficult as San Francisco and other cities generally have many public parks. So, if you have some time on your hands, grab a blanket, some food, and some loved ones and head to a park or even your yard to throw your own picnic.

But don't get too comfy! There's one more thing happening today on June 18th, Sushi Day!

Still looking for a food to bring to your picnic, here's a way to celebrate or observe both holidays! Bring sushi! First celebrated back in 2009, Sushi day was created for one purpose and that was to encourage sushi and give a day to sushi lovers.

Why is sushi all that amazing?

Sushi has so many things to offer and the combinations are endless. You have so many ingredients and kinds to choose from! The food has so much variety in it, containing all kinds of vegetables, sea food, seasonings, and sauces. Sushi isn't always a healthy meal contrary to what a lot of people believe. It's really only healthy based on the decisions you make when ordering or making your sushi. Depending on the choices you make you could end up with a meal that is very high in carbs and contains little to no vegetables.

Be careful though—sushi generally has a lot of sodium. Over half of US citizens are limited to a daily intake of around 1,500 milligrams sodium due to health risks and factors like high blood pressure. Something like a shrimp roll can have like a 1,000 milligrams of sodium, which is a crazy high amount. Another thing about sushi, the traditional sushi rice is made with sugar and rice vinegar. There is about 1 tablespoon of sugar for each cup of sushi rice. This often is the reason for people loving sushi and how it tastes. Sushi can be a healthy meal though! Once again, it really depends on you.

So if you've got no plans today, head to your nearest park, yard, or sushi restaurant and have a great Sunday.
