Iran Admits Involvement in Disaster
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was shot down on January 8, 2020, by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The destruction of the Boeing 737-800 plane was initially credited as a result of mechanical failure, or pilot error, by Iranian officials, denying the claims of the nation’s involvement in the tragedy. Now on January 11, 2020, Iran admitted that their IRGC brought the aircraft down. It was declared as an accident, human-error was what caused the 176 deaths of the people aboard the plane.
Iran accepted guilt when Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who, attempting to soften the blow that Iran would receive for the disaster they caused, defended the nation by mentioning the alert state which Iran is in due to American aggression. They plan to prosecute those involved in the disaster.
Once Iran admitted guilt, their nation faced civil retaliation: student-led protests were formed after mourning those whose lives’ were lost; people took to social media to share their voice. Both these things spread the common idea of Ali Khamenei’s removal from office.
U.S President took advantage of this situation to criticize the Iranian government on twitter, after connecting to the nation’s people. He sent his tweets in Farsi after tweeting them in English.
